Positive Reinforcement
I believe that all students want to do well, they just need to know that they are in a safe environment to make mistakes. In my classroom I utilize a system of four chances to improve upon their decisions. I have blue area where they can move up to if they are a helper to the other students and the classroom, this is EXCELLENT behavior. The students then can move to green which is SATISFACTORY behavior. They simply are doing what is expected, and following directions. Yellow is NEEDS IMPROVEMENT where the student needs to think about their choices and improve upon them. Red means that the student has received warnings and is still making poor choices. Their behavior is determined to be UNSATISFACTORY, and may result in a loss of recess and other events.
I implemented a behavior incentive program where in students can earn "Decision Dollars" for making good decisions. They can shop on specific days during the week which is a positive reward for their awesome behavior! The students enjoy "shopping" and earning treats for making excellent decisions.
